Dawn has many years of experience as a spokesperson and an exemplary background as a stalwart of trade unionism and its values. Dawn joined the railway fraternity in 1996 working as a service supervisor with Thameslink on the Brighton to Bedford route but  it was not long before her passion for the industry soon took her in the direction of helping others.

I am currently a driver for First Capital Connect at Brighton. In 1998 I entered the Driving Grade as a trainee and qualified in 1999. In 2002 I became a Driver Trainee.

I hold my commitment to supporting colleagues in the rail industry as something special to me. These commitments lead me to becoming a staff representative the same year of my induction to the railway fraternity. This was followed by my taking the role of Assistant Branch Secretary.

Never one to sit back and let others do the work I was soon elected to the position of Branch Secretary and eventually the Health and Safety Representative.

An immense amount of time was given to the Women’s consultative committee and attending many conferences in support of the trade union movement.

I remain driven to helping others and that is why some of my time is also devoted to organisation outside the railway where I am the standard bearer for the women’s section of my local British Legion. This also includes the role of caseworker for the Royal British Legion welfare committee.

Many of you know that when you believe so strongly in the movement and tradition of the rail industry your passion quickly gravitates to righting the inadequacies and failings that we all see.

This is why I’m here, that is why I’m staying, because that’s who I am, a rail person to the core.
