Frequently Asked Questions:
Q. What is the difference between this union and others?
A ATCU is non affiliated, apolitical union, therefore its only function is to carry out the wishes of its members as opposed to binding decisions reached by other parties or influences.
Q. Why is ATCU not affiliated to the Labour Party?
A.
The political climate has changed. Political interests are very different from the time when there was a common ideology and understanding between trade unions and workers parliamentary representatives.
Therefore we need to change. The Union will direct your energy and recourses to areas of political interest which will benefit you and your community.
Q. What legal services are available to Members?
A. ATCU Solicitors have industry specific experience including staff that worked in the past for other Rail Unions. Ease of contact with the Union puts help at the end of a phone 24hours per day. Assistance already provided has been crucial in saving the jobs of a number of colleagues, and we will continue to use their professional expertise for our members. Other cases currently being pursued include workplace injury as well as non employment related matters.
Q. Who runs the Union?
A. This is a Members Union, they run it. Daily administration of the Union is in the hands of the
Assistant General Secretary and the Organisers Committee.
Q. What about representation in the workplace?
A. As in other Unions, your first port of call is the local rep. They’re backed by Head Office able to call on great experience including former officers from other Rail Unions. The ATCU have already represented Members employed in three different TOC's and enjoyed considerable success including in cases brought under Clause 9.
Q. I don't want to be preached to, can I have an opinion and express it freely?
A. This Union is a broad church. All are welcome and diverse opinions create debate that will make our Union stronger. All will be respected in the ATCU .
This Union will not be divided into ghettos of any artificially created groups. Members are all unique, all individuals and most importantly … all equal.
