Steve Gomersall comes from a long line of devoted hard working trade unionists. He is always proud to tell everyone that his father was a committed Branch Secretary and LDC representative, so trade unionism runs passionately through his veins. Steve modestly says that his aims and objectives at being a Regional Organiser are to recruit and serve the membership to the best of his ability. In reality his convictions are solidly rooted to the protection and promotion of everyone in the industry. His energy and enthusiasm is an example to all true trade unionists. I came in to this great industry in February 1988 under British Rail as a Trainman D. In 1992 I passed out as a driver under the Trainman’s Concept agreement. Since then I have remained at my depot of Barrow In Furness and have now been driving for 17 years 10 of which have been as a instructor. I am still honored to be part of the industry but my experience over the years has opened my eyes to what needs changing. Through the teachings and principles taught to me by my family who encouraged me to become involved within the trade union movement, I took on the role as branch treasurer and Assistant Branch Secretary for another union and I was also co-opted onto the LDC. I saw Health and Safety in the industry as a primary factor towards the protection of my colleagues and because of this I attended the Safe working of trains course and completed my H&S 1 and 2 and Cosh 1 and 2. This led me to become a Health & Safety representative. Over the years I have been involved in virtually every roll and type of negotiations that unions have to offer and I now intend to use the knowledge gained from my experience to propel the ATCU and its membership to the next level. My motivation is a grounded in the fact that I believe everyone has certain given rights, these are based on mutual respect and responsibility to each other and I see the distasteful nature of those who exploit others through fear and intimidation as an antithesis to my own and my father’s values. Together we will achieve our goals and overcome the obstacle that stand in our way, at the same time serving the membership like no other union can. Steve Gomersall Regional Organiser North West
